Building a website to do list

Written by Dr.D.

Remember the basics

When making a website, besides a good look, that are more item that are needed to make it successful. Where the success is popularity or making sales, forget one of the basic that your chances drop. This is a basic check list, use this to make sure you have your site ready for success.

Audience targeted site.

If you making a site, it should clear what the attraction for your audience is. If your site is about music, then everything on your site should deal with music. A site that is a menagerie of choices is harder to promote.

Keywords, description, and Key Words

Every page should have “Meta Tags”. The keywords and description tags are import to have on every page. The description and keywords of every page should be for that page and not the same on every page of the site. If the keywords are about sheet music, the page should not be on drum sticks. Repeating the key word or phrase in the page is also HIGHLY recommended.

Use Heading Tags.

The H1 and H2 tags should be used. Just making fonts bigger does not tell the search engines that the text is important. You should use heading tags for that.

Search Engine Friendly URLs

When you create pages the page URL should also help the search engines figure out what is on the page.  Do not use a program that makes pages without page information in the URL.

The sites should be designed as user friendly.

The text and backgrounds should be easy to see. The navigation should be simple to follow and find the content you are presenting. Remember, the less number of clicks to get there the better. Also test the under different browsers and screen sizes. What looks good on one browser may look very bad on another.

Using animated graphics.

A flash or moving image can be interesting, over doing it is very, vary bad. Search engines can’t see them, and they can annoy your visitors if it is distracting.

Webpage layout.

Your website design should have the same layout on all the pages. Your logo, and navigation should be on each page. Always be consistent with your webpage design. If you make it different, your website will appear to be unprofessional, and could confuse your visitors.

Spelling and Grammar

Always check the spelling and grammar on your site. Make sure the links work and images show as they should.

Basic Pages sites should have.

About - You should let the visitors have a easy way to find out about this site. Privacy - If you collect information you need to tell them what you will do with it.

Terms and Conditions – This should be displayed on your website for your protection.

Site Map – So search engines index your website more easily.

Changing Content.

You must keep your website fresh and up to date by changing it from time to time. You can not build and forget. If the search engines don’t find new current information, they will assume that it is not important for searching. Search engines believe no one wants old news.

It's not too late! If you find things that is not correct, it is well worth the time to change it. This is a basic check list, and should not be hard to ask your self does your site do each one of the things.   If your site is created with HTML of with a Content Management System like Joomla! or Wordpress the same rules apply.  The place that CMS do well at is it makes updating easer and has build in places for the meta information when you are making new pages.

Read What Our Clients Say About Hosting at Coastland Tech:

My various sites have been hosted by CoastlandTech for ten or twelve years.   It's not often that the owner of any tech company even knows who his customers are let alone talks to them.  I'm extremely pleased by the quick response I get from Dr. D to what usually turns out to be something I've overlooked.   I'd gladly recommend Dr. Peeks service to a web operation of any size or ambition.  theRepeatPrint.com
